The apparent change in the freqency of a sound wave as something passes you by. For example, the sound of a motorcycle appears to fall in pitch as it passes by. The sound actually stays constant, but the number of sound waves per second that impinge on the ear increases as the motorcycle approaches, and then reduces as it travels away.
